And finally … this from our friend Dorothy Reinhold:

For the first time in 22 years, the top AYSO boys’ team from Malibu won the section championship finals in Bakersfield on Sunday.

This was the third year in a row the team advanced to this high level of play.

Many of the 22-member team have played together for more than a decade.
The team had a surreal moment at the start of play on Saturday, the 1-year anniversary of the Woolsey fire.

Many of the boys on the team had lost their homes to the fire the same weekend of last year’s tournament; at least one parent recalled pulling into the Bakersfield parking lot last year and hearing news that her house was gone. They played on.

Coach Sid Gunasekera, who also lost his home in the fire last year, said because last-year’s team was shorthanded due to evacuations for the fire, many of the returning boys this year felt it was a job undone, and rallied hard to finish the job.

Coach Gunasekera called out standout moves from several players: In the finals the first score came from Evan Geft with an amazing right-footed kick; he received an assist from captain Nick Reinhold.

The second goal came from high-scoring Xavier Commerford.

Malibu goalies Zach Mosbacher and Mason Sainz were pummeled but made save after save.

Aidan Gunasekera shut down the opponent’s best player, and kept him from making a single shot on goal the entire game.

And with less than 5 minutes left in the game, mid-fielder Casey Kelly scored the final and third goal for a 3-1 victory.

Seniors plahing their last AYSO game were Nick Reinhold, Tommy Averna, Bowen Brock, Mason Sainz, Tal Magdish, Zack Mosbacher and Xavier Commerford.

Filling out the team are Kevin McNulty, Angel Diaz, Phurit Saribut, Danner Rondell, Jaden Fisher, Derrick Leroy, Aidan Gunasekera, Finn Coben, Noah Ovsiowitz, Casey Kelly, Hamish Buran, Cameron Burke, Evan Geft, Nicky Mallouk and Silas Gann,

That report from Dorothy Reinhold.
