A proposed bill that was sparked by the case of Mitrice Richardson has just been vetoed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The proposed bill would have required the operators of jails to give people a safe place to stay and wait … when they are released from official custody in the middle of the night.

Ten years ago, Mitrice Richardson was released from the Los Angeles County sheriff’s Malibu/Lost Hills Station just after midnight one night.

She was left to find her way home through a remote area, alone and on foot, with no money or phone.

Nine years later … another young black woman died after leaving an Alameda County jail in the middle of the night.

Jessica St. Louis’s death prompted the legislature to pass a bill that would change the rules.

Senate Bill 42 would have required county jails to allow those being released to stay until daylight hours if they chose, and to provide a safe place to wait for a ride.

The governor it would be too expensive.
