Parks officials over the hill hope to start construction in September of a permanent memorial for the 12 people killed in the Nov. 7 mass shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks.

A “healing garden” memorial will be built at Conejo Creek North Park in Thousand Oaks.

The ida is to dedicate the memorial by the one-year anniversary of the tragedy.

It was last November 7th … one day before the Woolsey fire broke out … that the methodical slaughter opened up in the borderline bar and Grill.

12 people were killed … one of them a Pepperdine student attending college tonight at the country-western line dance.

Another victim was Ventura County sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus … who was first wounded by the gunman … but then in the chaos was hit by a bullet fired by a California Highway Patrol officer’s rifle.

Borderline had deep Malibu roots … its first location was at Trancas.

The Ventura county star reports that the Thousand Oaks City Council last month approved a quarter million dollar grant for the project.

The planned healing garden will be highlighted by 12 water jets, 12 granite benches and 12 boulders – all representing the 12 victims – and other features.

They will include 248 pavers to represent the 248 Borderline survivors.

The gunman … Ian David Long … killed himself .

This story reported by the Ventura County Star.

Also from Ventura … a  small brush fire in the Ventura River bottom Sunday was apparently caused by a motorized bicycle.

The fire broke out just before 10:45 a.m. near Main Street and Highway 101 in Ventura, near the western edge of the city.

About 63 fire personnel and a helicopter in all responded, the department said, and crews stopped the blaze’s forward progress in about 40 minutes.

All it took to start the fire was a motorized bicycle … a reminder that powerlines only cost about 10% of the brush fires in California …

A motorized bicycle … much less a motorcycle hitting a rock … can accidentally start a fire by igniting light grass.

The Malibu City Council invites the entire community to attend a public ceremony to dedicate “Anchor for Malibu,” the City’s newest public art piece, on Thursday, July 25, at 10:00 AM at Legacy Park.

The sculpture was donated to the City by Malibu resident Dan Sandel in 2017.

It was created in 2004 by Israeli sculptor Emanuel Hatzofe at his studio in the Jaffa port neighborhood of Tel Aviv, Israel.

Sandel visited Hatzofe’s studio in 2005 and purchased the sculpture for his home in Malibu. The six-foot, five inch-tall sculpture weighs 3,300 lbs.

There will be speeches … and Malibu Poet Laureate Ellen Reich will read a poem she composed to commemorate the occasion.
