About two weeks are left in a environmental comment period on the president’s plan to increase oil drilling in the mountains … not very far to the northwest of Malibu.

And fracking is planned by the federal government.

Land in the Ojai area … U_S Forest Service land and other federal properties … are being opened up for oil and methane gas drilling.

The new environmental report has been ordered by a federal judge … and it paves the way for the restarting of new oil development on federal land in Ventura County.

Environmental groups say the study has shown that problems with fracking have only become more evident.

They worry not just about encouraging fossil fuel use in an era of global warming, but about tarnishing the natural landscape, polluting groundwater supplies and triggering earthquakes.

California also authorizes limited drilling and fracking on state and private lands, though Gov. Gavin Newsom has pledged to look at restricting some oil operations.
