Local state senator Ben Allen has introduced a proposed law that would phase out the sale and distribution of single-use plastics by 2030.

If his bill passes and gets signed by the governor … 75 percent of all plastic single-use packaging and products sold or distributed in California must be either be eliminated … or recycled … by the year 2030.

Allen says banning things like plastic straws or bags is just tinkering around the edges with a serious problem that needs to be addressed head-on.

Right now … less than 15 percent of single-use plastic in California is recycled.

The cost of recycling exceeds the scrap value of the plastic material.

And it’s getting worse … as China is no longer accepting materials.

A Navy cruiser will drop anchor off Malibu pier today.

It’s a shore leave for about 200 officers and sailors.

Over 200 Navy personnel will come ashore to enjoy visiting the Malibu community during their shore leave. Malibu individuals and businesses are encouraged to welcome and thank the Navy personnel and their families for their service to our country.

The city says Navy personnel will be serving the community through service projects during their stay.
