Malibu’s Only Local Daily News … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

——

Topanga Canyon Boulevard remains closed between P C H and Grandview.

Watch for traffic zipping out of Tuna Canyon Road … onto the P C H at the stop sign.

A mild rain storm is arriving in Malibu today.

But the L A County flood experts say no mud movement is expected from this one.

Light showers are likely … from this one … starting at about noon.

Only about a quarter of an inch is predicted to fall from this rainstorm through tomorrow morning.

The north winds will be blowing this weekend …. and it is going to be cold … really cold.

We may see highs of 54 degrees on Sunday… and overnight lows will drop to near freezing in the mountains above Malibu … bringing the threat of black ice to Kanan Dume Road and the Santa Monica Mountains Sunday night.

Malibu got between a half inch to just over 2 inches of rain over the past two days.

More rain fell at the eastern end of the city … less than an inch fell here at Trancas … more than two inches fell in upper Malibu Canyon.

Pepperdine University is getting a new president.

James A. Gash has been appointed to the post.

Gash previously served as the Pepperdine School of Law associate dean for strategic planning and external relations, and as a professor.

He takes over from Andrew K. Benton … Pepperdine’s longest serving president.

Gash is the first Pepperdine alumnus to serve as president; he graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the School of Law in 1993.

Two of his children are undergraduates at the university … while a third graduated last year.

A ceremony to formally acknowledge Gash as Pepperdine president will be held on March 4 at the Elkins Auditorium on campus.

The story was reported by the Malibu Times.

We told you Wednesday about free birdseed  … being donated by a chain of stores called Wild Bird unlimited.

The delivery was delayed.

The one ton of birdseed is scheduled to arrive in Malibu today.

Wild Birds Unlimited stores in Redondo Beach, Santa Monica, Ventura, Thousand Oaks and Yorba Linda are donating 100 20-pound bags of bird seed.

The Woolsey fire has denuded the mountains and is depriving birds of food.

The seed can be placed in pot saucers or scattered on the ground if you don’t have a bird feeder.

The bags will be delivered to Sherman’s Place at Zuma Beach this afternoon.

Might be a good idea to call ahead … and pick up a bag of free bird seed this weekend.

——

Also this weekend … the city’s household hazardous waste and electronic waste roundup.

People can bring

  • water-based paint
  • Used motor oil
  • Anti-freeze
  • Automotive and household batteries
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs (unbroken)
  • Electronics

All containers must be clearly labeled to identify the contents.

People can remain in their vehicle while it is unloaded.

Also … Malibu residents can protect themselves against identity theft by shredding confidential data this Saturday.

This event ends when the truck fills up – so you might want to get there early!

Limit per household is 5 standard boxes (or 5 13-gallon bags).

Both of these will begin at 10in the morning at Malibu City Hall’s Upper Parking Lot.

As of this morning … the events are both on … but might get rained out tomorrow … the forecast is for a break in the rains.
