The winters surge is arriving … supercharged by the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.  The number of people hospitalized has hit the highest number in more than a month.

Just in the past two days … 19 people who live in the Malibu city limits have tested positive for Covid 19.

In the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains region … 10 more positive cases.

COVID-19 hospitalizations have jumped across Southern California.

Since Nov. 23, COVID-19 hospitalizations have risen by 49 percent and 39 percent in Los Angeles County.

In LA County … 12 new cases of the omicron variant … that’s a total of 30 now.

Nine of those omicron cases were in people who were fully vaccinated and bolstered.

Malibu’s city council met formally … face to face … for the first time in 23 months yesterday.

State law prohibits them from having a meeting … unless it is formally posted in advance and open to the public.

That has not happened for almost two years … due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Yesterday … the council members sat down in City Hall at 8:15 in the morning to interview potential city manager candidates.

Then they adjourned into a closed door session.

It’s not clear how many people they interviewed.

Eight hours and 20 minutes later … they emerged and adjourned the meeting.

Schools nationwide … and here in Malibu … are dealing with yet another Internet threat.

Yesterday … a TikTok threat spread like a virus across the nation.

It claims there will be school shootings and bombs today.

Santa Monica school superintendent Ben Drati says there is no location indicated.

Police departments and school districts across the country are fielding calls regarding this post.

It has been determined to be a hoax by the FBI.

Supervisor Sheila Kuehl may be leaving office … but she is really angry over the future of the the county supervisors district seat that she has held for 8 years.

Really angry.

What the bleep happened??? Kuehl writes in her weekly news comment … released yesterday.

Kuehl accuses the commission that split LA County into five supervisors districts what does anything but non-political.

Kuehl excuses conservative interest working behind the scenes to alter the district boundaries… To favor conservatives at the expense of liberals like herself.

The county supervisors district that includes Malibu has been changed… Some liberal bastions in the Hollywood area removed… Some conservative areas of the San Fernando Valley added.

Kuehl calls that manipulation …and she says that “two non-progressive men, middle-of-the-road Democrats who hope to be Supervisors … used the Commission to shape their own dream districts.”

Kuehl did not specify which man she was referring to.

But her PR office told the Santa Monica Daily Press newspaper that the attack was -NOT- on California State Senator Henry Stern.

Stern is a Malibu native who tossed his hat into the ring yesterday.

Other candidates include Santa Monica mayor and current assemblyman Richard Bloom.

LA County controller Ron Galperin is also running.

And Kuehl has endorsed West Hollywood mayor Lindsey Horvath.

A woman who lives in the mountains above Malibu is credited with saving Malibu from a possible electric-line balloon fire.

Paula Dempsey says she was driving over Highway 23 near Mulholland Highway when she spotted a car with its flashers on.

She stopped and the young woman driver told her the power lines above them had just exploded.

Dempsey saw that a plastic-coated balloon had floated into the power lines …come down to the hillside and then ignited the bushes above the road.

Dempsey wrote on Nextdoor that she grabbed a mug with ice tea and climbed up the hillside … poured the liquid on the fire … then used a stick to stir the embers into the dirt.

Job done.

Fire out.

Fire captain Rick Mullen wrote a note to Dempsey … saying … you rock … you saved Malibu.

It is amazing how just a little liquid can put out flames.

Santa Anas indeed cropped up overnight in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Winds are gusting up to 30 miles an hour at the mountaintops.

But down at sea level … thew winds are shooting over us.

Calm cold and foggy on the beach this morning.

Looking ahead… snow is likely in California’s mountains by Christmas.

And rain in Malibu on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Pacific Ocean rain door is open.

A series of winter storms appears lined up to add badly-needed rain and snow to the state.
