=.  The new Godzilla radio tower at the heart of Malibu is not exactly what the city approved 8 years ago.

=.  City Hall is getting peppered with complaints about the county antenna … which looks like a striped red and white garbage incinerator with a 74 foot tower.

=.  The county board of supervisors is poised to approve a camping plan for the trails just above Malibu tomorrow.

=.  Local government leaders will get an update tomorrow on the county’s plans for a juvenile offender prison in the hills above Malibu.

This is Malibu’s Only Local Daily News … the Monday edition … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

Kids Urged To Wear Masks At School Next 2 Weeks

School resumes this morning in Malibu … after a two-week spring break.

Everyone will need to present a negative Covid 19 test to get get on the campus at Malibu’s four public schools.

That’s going to cause a little line up … possibly.

Watch for extra traffic this morning … and the usual traffic this afternoon.

School nurses strongly recommendsthat students and staff wear masks for two weeks or longer after spring break.

Also … parents who are on-site do the same.

Students and families were traveling or gathering over spring break … and school officials say returning to mask-wearing upon return is one way for us to reduce the risk of transmission.

Kanan-Dume Road Attracting Suicidal Drivers

Over the weekend… The county coroner revealed that last Thursday’s fatal crash below Kana Dume Road was a suicide.

Roland Daleo … age 56 .. of the San Fernando Valley … was killed when his vehicle apparently was intentionally driven off Kanan-Dume Road … to plunge down a steep ravine into Ramirez Canyon.

This is the third suicide like this on Kanan Dume Road in the past two years.

It was just a few hundred yards away from where a 20 year old man from Moorpark drove his Porsche over a cliff …two years ago,.

Ugly Sheriff’s Tower At Civic Center Is Not What Was In The Plans In 2014

An ugly … squat … striped … 74 foot high antenna was not in the plans that were approved for the Malibu College campus in the center of Malibu.

But that is what was installed.

It looks like a smokestack … a bright and squat red and white smokestack.

The bright red and white striped antenna installed for the LA County sheriff’s department … in the heart of Malibu’s Civic Center … is certainly generating attention.

And what was installed last week is not what was in the 2014 decision … where the pole antenna was approved.

This is no ordinary antenna structure.

It’s thick … a self supporting metal tube.

it’s 74 feet high … And it has arms.

And its red and white stripes make it look like something Godzilla is about to smash through.

City Hall is getting peppered with complaints.

The 74-foot high Godzilla tower replaces the old 70 foot tower … but the old tower was a metal lattice work that was far less visible.

Back in 2014 … the city approved the replacement pole as part of the Santa Monica College Malibu campus project …

Included in that project is a sheriff substation with a helipad … and a communications tower.

Drawings indicated a much slimmer tower… And nothing was said about painting it a solid red and white.

In fact… The city was promising “a slimmer visual profile.”

The city planning staff said … and we quote … “it is not anticipated that the new tower, five feet taller, will impact the line-of-sight of impressive scenes.

“Therefore, no adverse impacts to the surrounding properties are anticipated as a result of the proposed tower replacement.”

Wrong.

The replacement tower was built in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines, which require lights and colors, since it is adjacent to the sheriff’s helipad.

It’s a safe bet that the Godzilla tower will come up at tonight’s Planning Commission meeting.

Supes Will Likely OK Camping Plan Tomorrow, Question Is: Which One

In 2014 … residents in the canyon above Paradise Cove filed a lawsuit against a planned campground … they said state coastal law does not allow a campsite in environmentally sensitive areas.

In 2017 … a judge agreed with them

And ever since … the Coastal Commission … the Board of Supervisors … and Joe Edmiston and his Mountain Recreation Conservation Authority have been trying to get around the state law … and the judge’s order.

Their latest effort to install campgrounds along the trails above Malibu … right above Malibu …

comes to a boil tomorrow at the the county Board of Supervisors meeting.

The supervisors are being asked by the Coastal Commission to approve a camping plan that sounds like … to be honest … a pretty miserable night on a hillside.

No fires … no cooking … no open flame …

Camp Kirkpatrick Conversion Into Prison Details To Be Released Tuesday

City leaders in Malibu and along the 101 Freeway will tomorrow get an update on plans to convert a youth correctional camp into a prison for young men who committed violent crimes when they were teenagers.

The lost virgin us council of governments is scheduled to get its first briefing from county officials on the prison camp that they envision for the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains. What was a model youth camp for rehabilitation of juvenile offenders is going to be rehabilitated into a prison camp for serious offenders. Most of these inmates are men… Adults who committed very serious crimes when they were juveniles. Just how exactly the youth camp will be remodeled has not been detailed.

County probation department officials are scheduled to brief representatives from five cities including Malibu tomorrow at the Los Virgenes COG meeting… Which is at 8:30 in the morning on the Internet.

Return Of The Snake – Mulholland Repairs Underway

And …it’s been three years since the fire destroyed Mulholland highway … up at the Snake.

Three years of relative peace and quiet in the Seminole Springs area.

That’s about to end.

County road crews have begun to replace burned culverts and guardrails not he stretch of Mulholland east of Kana Dume.

It’s called the Snake … it’s the world famous stretch of twisting switchbacks favored by motorcyclists and speed car enthusiasts.

And it has been closed due to fire damage for three and a half years.

Weekend crashes and helicopter rescues … routine.

Looks like this are coming back.

Overnight Work Tonight and Tomorrow Night On PCH At Trancas

For the first time … tonight crews will work overnight on the Trancas Creek Bridge.

Caltrans is replacing the 90 year old structure … one half at a time.

Lanes are going to be scrunched over to the ocean side of the bridge very soon.

We had originally been told the lanes would be scrunched to the inland side of the bridge … this were old plans.

The scrunched over lanes will be so narrow that there will be no room for bicycles or pedestrians to cross Trancas Creek.

They will be required to use a wooden footbridge that is quite literally being bolted to the side of the 95 year old bridge.

Quite literally …. Bolted to the side.

Yikes.

The section of the Backbone Trail that goes through Zuma Canyon has been closed for a month.

Crews wi/l be replacing the steel bridge across the bottom of Zuma Canyon.

It burned in the Woolsey Fire three years ago.

This is the section of Backbone Trail from Kanan Dume Road west tot he Zuma Ridge Motorway … on a weekend … a veritable freeway for hikers.

Surf Lagoon Proposed For San Juan Capistrano

Surfers may not have to go to Fresno … Texas or Palm Springs to catch a perfect artificial wave.

An Orange  County company has announced plans … they hope to build an artificial wave machine in a lagoon in San Juan Capistrano.

It’s been six years since Kelly Slater opened his surf ranch up in the San Joaquin Valley.

Another big wave machine has been built in Waco … Texas … although that one had a small problem with brain eating bacteria in the water.

Four artificial surf lagoons are in the works in the Coachella Valley.

Now … the Orange County Register reports the city of San Juan Capistrano is considering a surf lagoon next to the 5 Freeway.

A group of San Juan Capistranians think a surf lagoon could be a big moneymaker … and its profits could subsidize an aquatic and horse park next door.

The USA Surf Team is based in San Clemente, has given its endorsement, telling city leaders it could be the official training center for potential future Olympians.
