Santa Ana winds will return to parts of the Malibu mountains today.

It won’t be a big blow … up to 40 miles an hour.

Tomorrow the Santa Anas get stronger … one computer forecast is calling for a 9 millibar pressure differential … which would trigger big nasty winds.

But the human overlords at the National Weather Service say the computer may be a little overenthusiastic.

More Santa Anas will arrive next Tuesday … no rain ion the forecast for the next seven days.

Baby Killed By Covid In LA, Malibu-Area Death Toll Still 31

A baby has been killed by Covid 19 in LA County.

The 15-month-old child is the “youngest resident to die of COVID-19 since the pandemic began … according to LA’s Department of Public health.

Doctor Barbara Farrer says it’s “a stark reminder that the virus can cause devastating outcomes among those most vulnerable, including young children not yet eligible for vaccinations.”

91 new deaths were reported yesterday.

That’s among the highest daily totals.

The death toll in Malibu and the Santa Monica mountains remains at 31.

It was two years ago yesterday that the first Cove 19 case was detected in Los Angeles County. Since then 2.5 million people have come down with disease… According to official test results.

The actual number of positive cases is much much higher.

And the variant of the variant … dubbed stealth omicron … has been detected in California …

California has identified 13 cases of BA.2 so far, state officials said yesterday.

An infectious disease specialist at UCSF tells the San Francisco Chronicle … “If you’re vaccinated, and particularly if you’re boosted, I wouldn’t be worried about anything at this moment.”

Dr. Peter Chin-Hong says  “You won’t get super sick, no matter if pi or ro or sigma or whatever new variant comes.”

Massive Increase In Grand Theft Auto in Malibu, Sheriff’s Data Shows

A massive jump in the number of stolen cars and assault in Malibu.

The December 2021 figures show a 17.5 percent jump in reported major crimes in Malibu … but once again … that comparison may be a statistical fluke.

But this is comparing last December to December 2020 … when there was a COVID-19 lockdown.

Crime had decreased dramatically that year …

Nevertheless there are some trends that are newsworthy.

Grand theft auto is skyrocketing.

There were 19 stolen cars in December 2020 … 60 stolen cars in Malibu in the most recent December.

Here in Malibu … the number of assaults skyrocketed… from 18 in December of a year ago to 40 last December.

And the number of grand thefts … teens worth 950 dollars or more … up from 44 to 53.

There are some areas where crime has decreased.

Burglaries from locked vehicles … down by a quarter … from 113 to 93.

Burglaries from houses … way down from 45 to 25.

The crime statistics will be discussed at next Wednesday’s public safety commission meeting.

18 Year Old Driver Blames Failed Brakes For Malibu Canyon Deadly Crash

A midnight ride through  Malibu. … four 18 year old kids in a small sedan … no seat belts … a canyon wall.

The California Highway Patrol has now given KBUU news access to a preliminary investigation into that car crash early Tuesday morning that took the life of an 18-year-old Canoga Park youth.

The boy was identified as Parker Sweet.

It was not a head on crash as first reported … it was a single vehicle crash …

The driver of a car with four other 18 year old boys in it …

Heading out of Malibu … down the grade towards the tunnel in Malibu Canyon .,.. the driver says the brakes failed in his small Nissan sedan.

Any supposed brake failure has not been confirmed by the CHP … however.

The driver … 18 year old Goudani Ibrahim of Canyon County … lost control of the speed and smashed into the wall of the canyon.

The car then rolled … and a boy in the back seat … who was not wearing seat belts … was ejected.

Friends have organized a Go Fund Me drive to pay for Parker Sweet’s funeral.

It’s raised 8 thousand 2 hundred dollars …. towards a goal of 10 thousand dollars.

No charges have been filed against the driver … the 18 year old from Canyon County

Malibu High EIR Approved One Week After Dust-Up

The Santa Monica school board approved early construction plans for the Malibu high school reconstruction project at its board meeting last night.

$160 million project will be paid for by school bonds already approved by voters here in Malibu poop. The project is on a very tight timetable if it is to go out to bid this summer and open just 30 months from now.

Project managers say that spiraling costs May mean the district would run out of money if the bids are delayed. The project almost went off the tracks last week when the City of Malibu submitted a laundry list of technical questions and objections to the school districts environmental impact report.

Last night… City planning officials said they are satisfied with what the district plans to do.

School district facilities Director Carey Upton says Santa Monica College ran into the same problems when it was proposing it’s Malibu campus several years ago.
Malibu’s zoning ordinances are written for houses and businesses… but not schools.

Santa Monica College needed a series of variances to build its branch campus at the Civic Center. The school district has been told by the coastal commission to come up with a specific zoning plan … for this one specific site on Morning View Drive… instead.

Now that the environmental impact report has been approved by the school district… Architects will draft the exact blueprints. The entire project still must be approved by the Malibu planning commission and the Malibu city Council… And then the state coastal commission.

Thus the tight timeline.

The planning commission should get the Malibu high school proposal in May.

Westside LA Councilman Has Had It

In news from down the coast… Los Angeles city council member Mike Bonin says he will not run for a third term.

Bonin has been a lightning rod for right wing conservatives… who started blasting him when he installed traffic calming projects on major boulevards on the west side.

The liberal Bonin has also been a whipping boy for LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva… who said Bonin’s compassionate approach to homeless persons at Venice Beach led to lawlessness.

Bonin’s support from Westside liberals also began to a road erode when he started proposing tiny houses and homeless parking in city of LA properties in residential neighborhoods.

Mike Bonin is saying enough … he is going to retire.

CSU Camarillo Gets New President

The California State University Board of Trustees appointed Richard Yao as the fourth president of CSU Channel Islands on Wednesday.

Yao, 50, has served as the university’s interim president since January 2021, a role he assumed after the school’s former president, Erica D. Beck, was chosen as president of CSU Northridge.

In an interview, Yao expressed his gratitude for being selected during the open search process.

“Everything had to be earned,” Yao said. “I’m thankful for the vote of confidence from the board of trustees.”

His term takes effect immediately. Yao will oversee the campus south of Camarillo, which enrolls more than 7,000 students and has some 1,200 employees. He will earn a base salary of $338,514 and benefits that include a $5,000 monthly housing allowance and a $1,000 monthly vehicle allowance.

Before Yao’s career transitioned into student affairs, he worked as a senior lecturer in psychology at Nevada State College for eight years. He is a licensed clinical psychologist

Malibu is considering the use of emergency sirens to warn people about fires or tsunami’s. It would cost $1 million to cover Malibu… And it’s not clear if the system of sirens could be heard during Santa Anas.

One major city on the California coast has emergency sirens like that… or at least they used to. San Francisco for 80 years has had emergency sirens… tested every Tuesday at noon.

But several years ago they were turned off because they need lots of repairs. Lots of San Franciscans say they miss the emergency sirens and their tests.

San Francisco hopes to get its siren system back online … after $3 million in repairs.

NBC To Originate Super Bowl Pregame Show Next To PCH

Finally … NBC is whipping up a blizzard of publicity and hype for both the winter Olympics and the Super Bowl … and the hyper-hypestorm is hitting Santa Monica.

On January 31st … NBC will bring in snow to the Santa Monica Place Mall.

There might be more snow in Santa Monica that day than in Beijing.

And the network has just announced it will originate its Super Bowl pregame show from the Santa Monica Pier … on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Pregame show will kick off on the pier at 10 a.m. and run for five hours on NBC, Telemundo and Peacock.

A record breaking total of 27 hosts, analysts and commentators will be clamoring for air time.

There’s no word if the pier will be cleared of vendors cooking bacon wrapped hot dogs … for the event.
