2 Emergency Point Dume Beach Rock Walls Will Need To Be Removed, Or Need City Permits

The emergency construction of a rock wall to protect the Point Dume Beach access road … bathrooms and other structures from relentless battering by the ocean has generated some negative comments in Malibu.

Some people object to the noise … caused by 600 plus dump trucks dumping boulders next to the ocean.

Others … call for retreat … let the ocean move in and take the beach.

KBUU News has learned that LA County has taken out not only one .. but two emergency coastal permits for the rock revetment.

The first permit … three days before Christmas … was for 590 linear feet of rock wall.

The second permit … three weeks later … was for 650 feet …

But it’s not clear if that is an additional 650 feet of wall … or inclusive of the original permit for 590 feet.

On Wednesday … the Coastal Commission will allow the public to make comments on those emergency permits.

State Coastal Law allows members of the public to object to emergency permits … that are granted by Coastal Commission bureaucrats without public input.

The Coastal Commission meets Wednesday morning … at that time the executive director must report on the emergency permit … and give the public a chance to comment on it as well.

Under the Coastal Act … the rock wall is considered temporary and must be removed within six months.

Either that ,… or the county has to take out a Coastal Development Permit with the City of Malibu.

What this means is that L A County will foot the bill. … but the city council will have a vote on the giant rock wall.

Of course … if the Malibu city council rejects it … L-A county can always appeal to the state Coastal Commission for a permanent permit for it.

Norm Haney’s Proposed Hotel Across From Nobu Goes To Coastal Wednesday

The Coastal Commission on Wednesday will also consider amending Malibu’s zoning code map to allow developer Norm Haney to convert an office building into a luxury hotel …

Haney also wants to replace the  defunct Shell gas station with a grand hotel entrance … goes to the California Coastal Commission in February.

Haney calls it the Sea View Hotel … although he is trying to sell the deal to a hotel operator that will probably change that.

His concept is to take the 30-year old office building … remodel It into a small luxury hotel .. and access it from the property currently occupied by the remnants of a Shell gas station that closed decades ago.

This squalor is across the street from Nobu.

If built … the hotel has the capacity to replace much of the tax money now collected by the city for short term rentals in residential neighborhoods… Money that might be lost if the city reduces the number of bed and breakfast venues.

Haney’s proposal is backed by most factions on Malibu factuoiuse local scene… we’ve heard only one person speak against it in multiple public hearings here.

It goes before the Coastal Commission at its Internet only meeting … February 8th.

1.3 Million People Around World Tune In To P-22 Memorial Celebration In Griffith Park

More than 1.3 million people watched the memorial service for P-22 Saturday … as it streamed from the heart of the mountain lion’s habitat to around the world.

It was carried on a local NPR station.

And it was standing room only Saturday at Griffith Park’s Greek Theater … in the heart of P-22’s urban habitat of backyards … paths and the occasional deer for supper.

An emotional outpouring of support for an aging mountain lion who … in search of fresh habitat and perhaps an attractive female mate … blundered into the heart of Los Angeles … and the heart of Los Angelenos.

It was a bit much for the two National Park Service scientists who have spent decades tracking mountain lions in the mountains above Malibu.

Seth Riley …

NEWSCART A73905 P22 SETH RILEY

“My adventures with P 22 paralleled scenes from many LA based movies … from sticking under the Hollywood sign at night… With a permit of course… Being chased by the cops… Exploring LA mansions… Under percent from helicopters and news crews and even got me to the Greek.

“But P 22 is so much more than a celebrity … he is an important ambassador for urban wildlife … and his scientific contributions are many.”

People from all over California snapped up the tickets for seating at the Greek theater the moment they were released.

The Hollywood cougar made spiritual connections.

Perhaps. … none more tight than those whose ancestors used to own the Santa Monica Mountains.

Alan Salazar … a member of the Bernardino Toiyabe band of Mission Indians… told the crowd that P-22 opened their eyes.

NEWSCART A73907 ALAN SALAZAR

“I want to applaud all of you … because Southern Californians… I think we’re ahead of the curve.

“We’ve learned how to live with mountain lions now.

“He showed us the way… He showed us how to do it

It was lighthearted afternoon … funny videos of P-22 in backyards … sauntering down street in hipster land … Silverlake … Vermont Canyon … Los Feliz.

He was generally forgiven for eating a chihuahua … there small dog had been talking smack … one guy said.

Beth Pratt … the woman who founded save LA Cougars .. thanked the million plus people on Youtube watching.

NEWSCART A73906 BETH PRATT

“Thank you for being here to both grieve together… But also to celebrate the life of this incredible cat. And thank you to those of you tuning in virtually from all over the world… those of you tuning in on 89.3 KPCC.

“I’ve lost a lot of animals in my life… But I didn’t have to grieve them publicly and it’s been this outpouring of support from around the world that has helped all of us get through this.”

One last story about P-22 … from National Park Service biologist Seth Riley.

NEWSCART A73904 SETH RILEY

“During the last year he made some trips down into Silver Lake… and we saw an Instagram post… somebody posted some video of P 22 just doing his thing walking down the street.

“And you could hear in the background the person saying ‘holy bleep that is a bleeping mountain lion’ … which I love because it shows just what an amazing and exciting thing it was that P 22 even existed.”

National Park Service biologist Jeff Sikich … onstage at the Greek theater … last weekend.
