John Oliver Slices Into Malibu Rehab Centers On HBO

Written by on May 21, 2018

Malibu’s second biggest industry … over flipping houses … is rehab facilities.

And last night … HBO’S John Oliver went after them.

Oliver spent most of last night ’s Last Week Tonight exposing rehabs as a shady, scam-happy group.

Oliver went after Pax Prentiss and his son Chris Prentiss … the owners of Passages Malibu.

JOHN OLIVER:

“Many operators make huge claims about the success rate.

“Take Passages in Malibu.

“The father and son who run it make some pretty big promises about what they can do for you.”

PAULA ZAHN/CNN:

“When you send patients home, what do you say to them?”
CHRIS PRENTISS:

“You’re cured.”

PAX PRENTISS:

“Totally cured. 100 percent.”

CHRIS PRENTISS:

“You will never use drugs and alcohol again.”

PAX PRENTISS:

“Right.

CHRIS PRENTISS:

“Your dependency has been cured.

“Have a wonderful life.”

JOHN OLIVER:

“Bullsh-t!”

Oliver also went after Richard Taite … owner of Cliffside Malibu.

He made fun of Taite for losing track of his clients at his swanky, expensive, celebrity-courting rehabilitation clinic in the hills above Malibu.

And Oliver pointed out that Taite runs the two leading websites that review the effectiveness of rehabilitation centers.

And surprise surprise..

Taite owns RehabReviews.com and TheFix.com .

“Both of them are actually owned by Richard Taite, the founder of Cliffside Malibu.

“You remember, the guy who looks like Matt Lauer f—-ed a pair of Okaley sunglasses.

“And that fact of ownership certainly cast some doubt on the fact that The Fox awarded cliffside Malibu five out of five stars. “

Oliver called the industry shockingly unregulated …a joke.
