Heavy Rain Tonight- Strong Enough To Move Mud

Written by on March 5, 2019

A Flash Flood Watch goes into effect for Malibu at 6 pm tonight … but the main part of tonight’s approaching storm will probably hit around 9 p-m.

People in the recent burn areas are warned that peak rain rates of 0.50 to 0.80 inches per hour will be possible … which is more than enough to trigger mud flows and landslides.

The NWS predicts about 2 inches of rain, but this storm has a lot of thunder and lightning over the pacific, indicating a real possibility of downpours.

LA County has issued a PHASE ONE mudflow alert for the Malibu fire area, for the 12 hours starting at 9 p-m Tuesday.

Small isolated debris and mudflows possible.

Streets may be flooded or blocked by debris.

Debris may flow on private property. A few structures may be endangered.

There is some uncertainty as to exactly where the stalling of the rain band will occur.

Rainfall totals across eastern Ventura County and L.A. County should generally 0.75 to 1.5  inches on coastal and valley areas, and 1.5 to 3 inches in the foothills and mountains.

Peak rainfall rates of 0.50 to 0.80 inches per hour are possible … from this evening thru Wednesday morning.

Flash Flood Watches are in effect for all recent burn areas.
