Haynie Hotel Will Cost $1.5 Million To City And Waterworks, Under City Counteroffer

Written by on August 12, 2020

It will cost developer Norm Haynie an extra 200 thousand dollars if he wants to convert an office building and abandoned gas station into a luxury hotel.

And the money cannot be earmarked for the Boys and Girls Club … but will have to go to the city treasury …  and then maybe the Boys and Girls Club.

Nobody … not one person … spoke to oppose the proposed hotel.

The city council voted Monday night to

“What I am proposing is a benefit to the community as well as a benefit to the city.”

Hainey had originally offered 400 thousand dollars … then 800 thousand dollars … in civic benefits in exchange for the city allowing his hotel.

If Hainey takes the bait … that benefit will be $1 million paid to the city … that’s up from the $800,000 that Hailey had offered as a payment to the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu.

In addition … Hainey will have to write a $500,000 check to the Los Angeles County Waterworks District 29.

That will pay for new half million dollar valve to be installed on Topanga Canyon Boulevard just above Pacific Coast Highway.

That valve will allow the county to bring in water from a big reservoir in Topanga Canyon … for emergency use in Malibu … if the outside water supply pipes from Culver City are broken.

The county is requiring that improvement … which will benefit of all Malibu … in order to serve water to Hainey’s hotel.

The hotel would also bring in one million dollars in hotel tax .. to partly replace lost B And B tax revenue that will go away as the city cracks down on overnight rentals.

All of those specific benefits have even the strongest anti-growth people mollified.

Like Lyn Norton … who applauded the reuse of the office building and the elimination of the dilapidated former gas station.:

“Visually … Norman is putting a building in front of another building that is already there. So the only thing is building blocks the view of … is another building”

Not one opponent spoke Monday night.

the city council did balk on the deal to channel the cash payment from Hainey to the Boys and Girls Club of Malibu.

City council members said the money should go to the city … to then be disbursed back to community organizations … including the Boys and Girls Club.

Mayor Mikke Pierson said it was hard to find any downside to the hotel plan.

“I’ve done about this project for years.

“I think it’s a perfect fit.

“And I never thought ever but I would vote for a hotel in Malibu.”
