Edison Promises A Natural Meadow At Temporary Gravel Lot

Written by on February 26, 2019

More complaints last night … at the city council meeting … from residents about the grading of a grass-covered field into a gravel-covered utility company parking lot in the heart of Malibu.  The City of Malibu and Southern California Edison officials are explaining more details about the vacant lot being used by the power company.

It’s the so-called Ioki Lot … at the corner of Civic Center Way at Stewart Ranch Road.

The Edison company has rented it from the private Ioki Family trust … to stage equipment as the utility performs emergency fire prevention work in Malibu.

City manager reva Feldman said it was a private transaction … the city had no power to block the project even if it had a need to.

“We didn’t have the ability to deny their re to use the property.

“Our bio did inspect the property, and there was no wetland there.

“As Edison has mentioned, the property has been cleared on a regular basis, at least once a year, with a tractor.”

As for the power company … it says it needs to rent the lot so that its trucks will not have to commute back and forth to Malibu … as it performs a concentrated fire protection effort ordered by the state.

“So to facilitate that happening in Malibu … we identified a yard so that the crews can report there, get the equipment, and then go off and do the work that they need to do.

“Without a yard, it would be trucks coming over the canyons and it would take a lot more time.”

And the Edison company biologist told the city council last night that the meadow-like field will be restored when the trucks are done … in three or four months.

“An agreement we have with a property owner, (is) we are going to return the site to existing conditions.

“We did work with the city biologist to identify a seed mix of native seeds, so when the site is done we are going to return it to existing conditions.

“And actually better than existing, because we are going to use better seed than (the existing) non-native grass that is out there.”

Edison officials said the work being performed in Malibu will be finished in about 120 days.
