Temporary Power Poles? Edison Doesn’t Like Them, City Not Much Either

Written by on February 6, 2019

In Malibu ….

Fire victims who want to put in a temporary power pole at their burned out houses … may be in for a disappointment.

Southern California Edison  and city bureaucrats think it is a bad idea.

They are recommending ot the city council that it not change the current city policy …. that say electricity can only be delivered to a meter on a permanent structure.

Many Malibu residents have told the Planning Commission that they want temporary power poles to maintain landscaping, security gates and pool maintenance.

And they want it now.

But city staffers have a policy against that.

Only permanent service panels and wiring methods are allowed.

The city’s goal is to avoid the installation of numerous temporary power poles throughout the burn areas on properties … including many that may not be occupied for several years.

Southern California Edison also reportedly against numerous temporary above ground power poles and wires on properties.

Malibu’s city council is gong to examine this next week … the city staff is recommending that it be allowed to consider on a  case by case basis allowing temporary poles to run equipment such as irrigation controllers, pool equipment, and electric gates.

The city council will also consider changing the definition of temporary housing units … to make allowable double wide trailers … or to allow two smaller modular units on the property.

This will get discussed at the Monday night city council meeting.
