Developer Proposes 362 Tiny Apartments In SM

And in news from down the coast … the Santa Monica City Council is considering a ban on tiny studio apartments.

The Santa Monica Daily Press reports that one company has filed applications to build six buildings … each composed entirely comprised of tiny apartments.

And we mean small.

Each unit would be between 219 and 373 square feet.

That’s 362 new units … to be built on 5th, 6th and 7th Streets.

Each apartment unit … the size of a living room.

The developer … NMS Properties … says the micro-units are a solution to the region’s housing shortage.

in a statement … they write that “while micro-units are not for everyone, they are the perfect solution for demanding jobs where the tenant simply needs a place to sleep, shower and store their belongings.”

City staff in Santa Monica has predictably freaked out …

They say the microapartments comply with city codes … but do not provide the  variety of housing types sought by the city.

They say family housing needs to be part of the mix.

The city planners want the Santa Monica city council ban microunits until the city can come up with a plan.

That story was based on reporting by the Santa Monica Daily Press.
