County May Be Opening Door To Camping

Written by on May 3, 2019

Camping in Environmentally Sensitive Habitat Areas … ESHAs … is being proposed for the Santa Monica Mountains.

L A County is apparently proposing to change its LCP – its Coastal Commission plan for the mountains – to open up large areas for campgrounds.

Today … a delegation of Malibu and foothill residents is trooping over the hill to County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl’s office … to campaign against the change.

City council member Karen Farrer is requesting that the city council oppose the proposed ordinance.

We’ve asked Kuehl’s office what is happening here … no response yet.

The change would allow campgrounds to be built in canyon bottoms … including in places like Ramirez Canyon … the steep ravine below Kanan-Dume Road.

Joe Edmiston and his MRCA … the Mountain Resource Conservation Agency …. has long coveted the idea of campgrounds in Malibu.

This would open the door for camping above the city.
