Council Cancels Early Meeting, But Plans A Late One: B and Bs On Agenda

Written by on September 25, 2018

There appears to be a bit of a power play going on at the city council.

Or possibly … some gamesmanship between city council members.

The extended trip of city council member Skylar Peak to Bali caused cancellation of one city council meeting …. and a two day delay in this week’s meeting.

It also caused the last minute scheduling of a city council subcommittee meeting … to 2:30 tomorrow afternoon.

That would lead to a 10 or 12 hour series of meetings.

One city councilman said no … he would not show up.

That would be either Skylar Peak or Jefferson Wagner … who are the two members of the city council’s zoning subcommittee.

That means the proposed zoning change … to allow commercial lots to be used as standalone parking lots … postponed to a date to be determined.

One slight correction … yesterday we reported that Skylar Peak was out of Malibu … in Fiji.

The correct island is Bali.

KBUU News got it’s tropical islands mixed up.

And the first city council meeting in more than a month is on tap … for 5 o’clock tomorrow afternoon and well into the night.

The major item on the agenda is the proposed city ordinance to crackdown on overnight rental of residential units.

Dozens of people can be expected to testify on that one.

The issue is the conversion of some Malibu streets into motel parking lots… in the view of some Malibu residents.

Or … it can be framed as the unwanted intrusion of government into free enterprise.

Or … you can look at it as coastal elitists trying to reduce the number a general public beach visitors.

Or … it can be looked at as a last chance to preserve Malibu’ residential neigbborhoods … as quality living places.

All those viewpoints have spoken in the past … and will be on display tomorrow night.

Other items on the agenda include signing off on completion for the $60 million Malibu Civic Center sewage plant.

And setting up some sort of timetable and process for deciding what to do with three vacant lots that the city purchased this summer at the Civic Center … and Point Dume.

The city manager’s disclosure that a 2 acre parking lot would have to be built at Point Dume … under the conditions of the funding arrangement from LA Metro … has raised the hackles of many Malibu residents.

Some fear that Point Dume could be used as a shuttle parking lot … for the MRCA or other groups to bring hikers into residential neighborhoods.

That freshly brewing controversy will also be brought up … it appears.
