City Council To Meet Today At 3pm, Will Discuss Rent Freeze, Back Rent and Eviction Ban

Written by on May 29, 2020

Total confusion exists in California … as tenants landlords and society in general deal with an economic crisis brought about by the pandemic.

Are rents frozen?

Are evictions banned?

Are commercial properties covered?

What is the law in Malibu … and in unincorporated L A County?

There is a patchwork of executive orders … ordinances and different decisions by the state … county and city.
Malibu’s city council will go into emergency session … this afternoon at 3 … to try to sort out the local situation.

The governor has authorized cities to freeze rent and ban evictions in a pair of executive orders.

The county has a ban … and allows cities to ban evictions.

Which Malibu has done.

But city attorney Christi Hogin warns this is a complex and unprecedented area of the law

She is asking the city council to to extend the ban on evictions for two months … and to eliminate the expiration date for repayment provisions.

In a legal memo written to the city council … Hogin says the city has a tremendous interest in preventing widespread homelessness and supporting the purpose behind safer-at-home directives issued by federal, state and county health authorities.

The city council will use its computers to meet.

You can watch … or offer your opinion … from home.

The special meeting is at 3 p-m today on the city’s web page.
