Bring Popcorn: Planning Commission Versus City Staff On Mansion Size, Monday Night At City Council

Written by on July 10, 2020

A battle between the Malibu Planning Commission and staff at City Hall over the size of a beachfront mansion will spill over to the Malibu City Council on Monday.

At issue is a proposed remodel of a bluff-top house along the coast on PCH west of Broadbeach.

The proposal was rejected by the planning commissioners … who sent the proposed second floor additions would violate a City rule aimed at preventing boxy structures.

The city planning director … Bonnie Blue … says the planning commissioners went overboard …

Without getting too far into the weeds … her reading of the city ordinance counts downstairs decks when computing how much upstairs rooms can be added to a house.

By a 3 to 2 vote … the Planning Commission said that was ridiculous … it could mean building a giant deck downstairs would allow someone to build a giant upstairs addition.

The latest disagreement between the Planning Commissioners and the Planning staff goes before the city council Monday night.
