This is Malibu’s Only Local Daily News … the Monday edition … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

“Your Team Just Won The Super Bowl,  Where Are You Going?” “Home To Malibu”

A Super Bowl ring is headed towards Malibu.

Billionaire shopping center owner Stan Kroenke lives in an oceanfront mansion along the coast.

He owns the shopping center with Ralphs and CVS.

Plus a huge real estate inventory across the nation.

And oh yes … the Los Angeles Rams.

As far as Malibu angles for the local Super Bowl …

The air above Malibu had five U S Air Force jets circling yesterday afternoon… Waiting for their queue to fly over the Super Bowl in Inglewood.

NBC is taking some knocks for only showing 2.7 seconds of the flyover during their network coverage.

And the city of Santa Monica managed to send out a picture of a Russian MIG fighter to accompany its Tweet alerting Santa Moncians about the overflight.

Fox News having a lot of fun with that.

Quiet has returned to downtown L-A after last night’s celebration of the L A Rams victory in the L A Super Bowl.

A few arrests … some vandalism … one store got looted.

Nothing like past Lakers riots … however.

NPS Radio Data Shows P-54 Was At Pepperdine When Dog Was Killed

National Park Service radio tags show that mountain lion P-54 was on the Pepperdine campus 10 days ago … then night that a large dog went out to relieve itself in a patio … only to be killed by a cougar.

P-54 and her offspring, a kitten named P-97, have also been in the Serra Retreat neighborhood last week.

NPS ranger Ana Cholo tells KBUU News that are not a threat to people.

She says “these animals are not displaying unusual behavior, nor have they shown any aggressive behavior towards people.”

P-54 and P-97 were spotted in the area where P-97’s twin kitten chomped its jaws around the head of a five year old child in his front yard … six miles up Malibu Canyon from Pepperdine.

In that case … the offending kitten was shot and killed … but P-54 and her offspring were allowed to scoot away because they had not exhibited any threatening behavior.

At Pepperdine … the family that lost their beloved family pet is not exactly happy that P-54 is still on campus.

KBUU is not using their names … their kids were traumatized but are described as healing.

They tell us they fear that P-54 is now used to people …. and that she had apparently been spotted on Pepperdine’s campus for a week before their dog was taken.

They say families up and down their street report their dogs would not go outside all week … apparently having detected the mountain lions outside.

The family does not want P-54 or P-97 killed … but they want them driven out of the neighborhood.

Pepperdine Public Safety officers have been authorized to use explosive devices or to fire beanbag guns at the mountain lions … which are frequently spotted at the on campus housing and elsewhere at Pepperdine.

Back at the National Park Service … Ranger Ana Cholo urges people living in the mountains to learn about the wildlife they coexist with.

She says that … when mountain residents ask if there is a risk that unattended pets or livestock may get killed by a mountain lion … their  response will always be “yes.”

P-54 and P-97 have been spotted in the streets and lanes of Serra Estates …. Down at the malibu Civic Center.

Cholo urges pet owners to keep dogs and cats indoors, especially after dusk and before dawn, to prevent them from becoming prey for mountain lions and other wild animals.

P-54 and her offspring, P-97, are not displaying unusual behavior, nor have they shown any aggressive behavior towards people.

And they are out there.

Silverstein Uses 1,134 Words To Rationalize Treatment Of Feldman, Which Outside Lawyer Says Witnesses Found ‘Hostile’ And ‘Harassment’

City Council member Bruce Silverstein says he is surprised that an outside lawyer brought in to investigate claims of harassment and intimidation found he was … quote … hostile and unprofessional.

The lawyer …. Leslie Ellis … found that Silverstein’s communications and conduct toward and about Ms. Feldman were frequently hostile and unprofessional …

She wrote that “witnesses described Mr. Silverstein’s conduct as ‘harassment’ and a ‘hostile work environment,’’harassment’ and a ‘hostile work environment.’”

And … as the outside investigator put it … if Silverstein thought “he could act like an ass” … that would not be illegal … because he was not doing it as a response to Feldman being a woman.

Silverstein has written a 16 hundred and 11 word defense in a letter to the Malibu Times,

In it. … he complains that the lawyer was hired for one reason only … to determine if Silverstein broke the law and harassed the then-city manager Reva Feldman because she is a woman.

And Silverstein points out that the outside investigator … Ellis … found unequivocally that he did not sexually harass Feldman.

But the investigating attorney also found that Silverstein bombarded Feldman with emails … public document requests … and other acts in a hostile and unprofessional manner.

And that several high ranking employees at City Hall thought his behavior created a hostile workplace atmosphere.

In his letter to the editor … Silverstein complains that he would not have cooperated with the outside lawyer as he did … had he known that she would form opinions about his behavior.

Quote: “I was never informed that the lawyer would be offering a gratuitous opinion about professionalism and civility.

Continuing:
“If I had been informed that the lawyer would be volunteering such an opinion, I would have … objected that the lawyer lacked the expertise to offer an informed view of those subjects…”

Silverstein also explained away his behavior … and said each instance could have been answered by … quote … “placing it in the specific context of the activity of the now-former City Manager that was being addressed.”

Silverstein’s letter to the editor includes a long letter to the editor from a political supporter.

And it ends by quoting himself … referring to himself in the third party. We quote:

“Mr. Silverstein stated in his HR Complaint that Ms. Feldman’s ‘hostility, recalcitrance, impertinence, and insubordination’ was unlike anything he had ever experienced with a managerial employee.”

Silverstein Slams Council Majority On Eve Of Mayoral Vote

That’s not the only Silverstein letter floating around Malibu this morning.

The new city council member has – in writing – castigated several people who said he should resign at city council meeting.

Silverstein called those political comments “juvenile.”

And then he went after the three member city council majority.

At the last council meeting in December … Mayor Paul Grisanti joined members Karen Ferrer and Mikke Pierson in blasting Silverstein.

Silverstein wrote in a letter to a constituent that this was a “misuse (of) their official time at the dais to berate and insult me (and not for the first time).”

Call that a Valentines weekend love letter to the three council members.

One of those three must vote for Silverstein tonight … if he is to rotate into the office of Malibu mayor … something he has coveted.

Looks like … barring a major surprise … that is not gonna happen.

We remind you of what Karen Farrer and Mikke Pierson and said last December.

NEWSCART A73090 KF he will do that/NEWSCART A73091 MP tired of this bs

FERRER: “In the ideal world you would have the decency to resign. But this is the real world and I don’t think he will do that.”

PIERSON:   “In my opinion to be successful as an elected official people must trust you, everyone of us up here. And right now I’m hearing a lot of voices that don’t feel that way at all. I’m hearing calls for you to resign and more. I’m hearing anger and I’m hearing from a city where the majority appear to be tired of this BS.”

Pierson’s termininology … “BS” … could be taken to be referring to Bruce Silverstein … or his Silverstein’s antics … that is open to interpretation. .

The city council meeting is tonight at 6:30 on the internet.

Selection of a new mayor .. or whatever… Is first on the agenda.

And for what it’s worth … the Malibu Chamber of Commerce is hosting its state of the city address later this week… where the new mayor get to make an address.

The guest speakers have already been invited… and Silverstein is not a on the list..

Malibu-Area Water Agency Walks Away From Westside Desal Plant

The water district that supplies water to Malibu has reversed course …and is walking away from tentative plans to build a desalinization plant near LAX to serve Malibu and South Bay cities.

Scott Houston represents Malibu and Topanga Canyon on th eboard of the West Basin Municipal Water District … while wholesales water to the agency that delivers it to Malibu … County Waterworks District 29.

Houston tells KBUU News there is one big reason for rejected desalination … even in the middle of a long term drought.

NEWSCART A DESAL SCOTT

‘It shows that the water is much more expensive.”

Not to mention … extremely unfriendly to the ocean … it kills fish … dumps salt waste into the water … and uses a lot of electricity.

NEWSCART A DESAL SCOTT HOUSTON BBB

“We really had a lot of other options to pursue first … before we look at desalinization. Those would include more recycled water or water reuse … as well as more groundwater replenishment in the South Bay area. Those would be two of the options that would continue to provide more new water to the district …as well as continue to push hard on conservation.”

Much of the water delivered to Malibu is cleaned and recycled sewage water.

Some of it from cities as far away as Sacramernto … which release treated effluent into the river delta just upstream from the California Aqueduct intakes.

Other treated effluent enters out supply from Las Vegas.

But a large percentage is clean groundwater … pumped up from aquifers under Los Angeles that are replenished with treated sewage from LA.

SM Mayor Argues ‘Districts Are Supposed To Be Contiguous’ To Argue Against District Voting

Santa Monica’s mayor has been a steadfast voice against Malibu giving an independent school district… as residents feel that Malibu is not contiguous to Santa Monica and not part of that community.

But now … she is quoted as using the same argument to try to defeat school district voting plan that could give Malibu an edge.

Meeting last week … Santa Monica’s city council went on record as opposing a petition from some Malibu voters … asking that the school district convert to voting by districts for school board members.

A Malibu lawyer who has once before sued the City of Santa Monica over voting rights issues …. Kevin Scheinkman … is taking advantage of a new state law. It allows voting by district to be imposed on a school district to cure violations of the state voting rights act… Violations that dilute the voting power of protected classes.

Scheinkman contends that Malibu is a protected class… A minority controlled by the seven to one advantage of Santa Monica vote voters.

Shenkman drew the map to target the incumbent Santa Monica school board members who oppose a Malibu independent school district.

He points out that the majority of the Santa Monica school board all live within walking distance of each other near Montana Avenue and do not represent people living on the southside of Santa Monica or in Malibu.

That strikes close to home for the Santa Monica city council members… so they’re going to spend taxpayer money to once again take on Malibu. They said Scheinkman’s Malibu petition seeks to “override the Santa Monica City Charter without a vote of the people and without a showing of any compelling interest that would justify doing so.”

Particularly going to Santa Monica Mayor Susan Himmelrich is that the proposed Shcnekman maps split two districts between Malibu and Santa Monica … with giant chunks of Pacific Ocean and Los Angeles municipality between them.

At last weeks Santa Monica city Council meeting… Himmelrich said “Districts are supposed to be contiguous. They aren’t.”

Malibu residents may want to write that down,

That story is based on reporting in the Santa Monica Daily Press.

For six weeks… Malibu has had practically no fog… certainly no rain… And a series of record setting heat.

It’s going to end… tomorrow… with a slight chance of rain.

Less than a tenth of an inch … if any.

Then dry the next six days after that.
