Anti-Mansionization Measure Polarizes Malibu: What Are Community Standards?

Written by on June 28, 2019

The great Malibu Mansion debate is on.  Local realtors and construction advocates on one side.

Slow growth and anti-mansionization forces on the other.

In the middle … those Malibu residents sitting in smaller houses … who may be counting on cashing out for maximum sales value.

That’s the stage set for Monday night’s planning commission meeting.

The city council has already told its appointees and staff that it wants neighborhood character to be considered … when small houses are torn down and replaced.

Too often … in the opinion of many …the new houses are built right up to the maximum possible size for the land.

Then … they are sold as spec houses for big profits … leaving behind vastly diminished views and character next door.

Malibu voters have spoken loud and clear … when they twice voted for four city council candidates running on clear neighborhood preservation platforms.

Realtors are speaking loudly … they are sending out letters and hosting pizza parties Monday night to rally citizens in favor of private property rights.

Should be an epic meeting.
