Across the nation yesterday … women and men stood on street corners to proclaim support for a woman’s right to choose what happens to her own body.

In Malibu .. about 30 persons and several dogs were congregated at the city’s unofficial speakers corner … the busy intersection of Pacific Coast Highway at Webb Way.

There was chanting.

NEWSCART 75136 ABORTION Q AND A :

REPORTER: “Are 30 people on a street corner in Malibu California really going to make a difference on this??”

CHANTER: “Everybody makes a difference on this.

“Every voice makes a difference.

“We need to be heard.

“It’s important.

“We’re about women’s rights, we’re about woman’s health.

“More about anything, it’s been a long battle to get women recognized in the healthcare system and we’re not going to go backwards.”

All of the demonstrators last night … most of them least 50 years of age or older.

And they were not happy about resuming this fight.

“It’s really demoralizing, because women’s health is the most important thing, and to realize that we could go backwards is really demoralizing.”

That was Christine … she said she was 62 and remembers the political wars that she thoiught had ended with the Supreme Court decision in Roe versus Wade in 1973.

Malibu resident Rory Kennedy … last night.

“Well, it is frustrating that we’re still here having this discussion and it seems a pretty basic fundamental right for women to be to decide what to do with their bodies.”

What is shaping up to be the major cultural and political war of this century … on the street corner in downtown Malibu last night.
