Group Proposes Beach Parking Lot For Overnight Homeless Parking

Written by on June 4, 2019

A group is proposing that homeless individuals who live in their vehicles and have no safe place to park … be given an oceanfront spot in Malibu.

Dan Blocker Beach .. to be specific.

Members of the Malibu Homelessness Working Group says the beach parking lot … on P C H at Latigo Beach … is the best place in town for a homeless encampment on a permanent basis.

The advantage of this lot … they say … is that it is not located directly next to a residence or business, and it has good lighting, visibility, and a restroom.

The oceanfront parking lot has been a total failure since it was opened by then-County Zev Yaroslavsky several years ago.

It was billed as Malibu’s first new public beach in 30 years.

Only one problem.

No beach.

The County installed a so-called public beach with a pay parking lot and no staircase down the cliff.

In fact … the cliff above the beach is fenced off … and it’s rare to see a car in the pay parking lot.

The Malibu Homeless Outreach Team says there are currently as many as ten individuals living in their cars in Malibu … who would be qualified candidates for this program.

Apparently … they would get to park overnight … and have to drive off at sunrise.

The Malibu Homelessness Working Group is requesting the Public Safety Commission provide a recommendation to the City Council.

Should the city should officially support the implementation of a Safe Parking Program at Dan Blocker Beach.

The Public Safety Commission meets at 5 o’clock Wednesday at City Hall.
