Pointless Effort to Rename School Continues

Written by on May 13, 2019

School district officials are going to try a second time to go to the public … to rename the school at Point Dume.

With the merger of Juan Cabrillo Elementary into Point Dume Marine Sciences Elementary School … the district says a new name is necessary at Point Dume.

And the district officials say the new name should not have the words Cabrillo or Point Dume in it.

Many Point Dume residents disagree … and say the school should be called by its original name … Point Dume Elementary.

Many people in other areas say its not right to call what used to be a neighborhood school by a name that does not reflect other neighborhoods…

One of which … has just lost their neighborhood school.

The first effort to reach a new name ended with a committee choosing Malibu Ocean Elementary School … or MOES.

That went over like a lead balloon.

The district will now accept nominations from everyone.

The original task force will narrow the nominations to a short list of finalist choices next week.

But the vote will be left exclusively … however … to the current teachers, staff, and families of Juan Cabrillo and Point Dume schools.

This voting will be “ranked choice voting.”

Expect a puff of white smoke from the school district office … with the ultimate name on Tuesday, May 28th

It goes to the school board for final approval at the end of the month.

You can send in your idea, too:
