It was a weed whacker that sparked that big fire yesterday in the Hollywood Hills … above Beverly Hills.
Residents of about 86 homes were evacuated.
More than 250 firefighters attacked the fire … near the Beverly Crest and Benedict Canyon areas.
The fire is substantially out.
Also out … a small brush fire north west of thousand oaks … and three small spot fires at the eastern end of the San Fernando Valley near Hanson dam.

Controversial plans by the Malibu Beach Inn to spread their business across Pacific Coast Highway in central Malibu may have been dealt a death blow.

Broad Beach has won a legal battle over the route that its thousands of trucks will use to being sand from Ventura County to Malibu.

In news from both sides of California … left and right:
Mammoth Mountain will close its ski slopes for the season … this Sunday.
The ski lifts are running from 7:30 until 1 until then.
Mammoth Mountain got a total of 420 inches at the summit this past season … and 4 inches of new snow during late-season storms in May.
After Sunday .. no more skiing … but gondola rides …. bicycles golf and other
summer sports are in full swing.
On the other side of California … the entire coastal stretch of California’s iconic Highway 1 will re-open at the end of July.
Caltrans announced yesterday that the massive landslide south of Big Sur will be fixed before the middle of summer.
It closed 13 months ago after heavy winter rains triggered a massive landslide.
The landslide meant hard times for Big Sur businesses.
Highway 1 up the coast … should be open by late July.

Southern California Edison has killed the power in at least one Malibu Park neighborhood this morning.
Neither the power company nor the city are telling us how widespread this planned outage is. be.
Power will be off int he Seastar and Surfside neighborhoods from 9 to 5.
