New PCH Signal MAY Get 86’d

Controversial plans by the Malibu Beach Inn to spread their business across Pacific Coast Highway in central Malibu may have been dealt a death blow.

Owners of the hotel have convinced Caltrans and the Coastal Commission to let them install a new traffic light on PCH … just east of the existing traffic light at the Malibu Pier.

The traffic light would allow valets to cross P C H between the Malibu Beach Inn … and the parking lot where they want to keep their guests cars.

The existing parking lot at the hotel would be replaced with a swimming pool …. for the private enjoyment of the guests … while P C H traffic would be aggravated with cars maneuvering back and forth across the highway … valets crossing … and a new stop light that would be short spaced with the existing signal.

Construction on the traffic signal is almost finished …. you might recall the lane closures caused some massive traffic jams last spring.

Although Caltrans and the Coastal Commission have okayed installation of the new signal … the city hasn’t acted on it yet.

Local architect Lester Tobias … one of several people trying to block the traffic light…

He told the city council that city staff is now recommending the rejection of the signal.

Monday night … he read a new city memo.

PCH LESTER TOBIAS  :17 QQQ:

“It says the City of Malibu PCH safety study dated May 18, 2015, identified uncontrolled left (turn)s along the highway as a contributing factor to collisions along the highway.

“ The prop valet service will result in creating uncontrolled left turns to and from PCH.

“The applicant will need to resolve how this would be resolved.”

And that hasn’t happened.

City council member Skylar Peak said Monday he is all for killing the traffic light right now.

The matters comes up for a decision in two weeks.
