School Bus To Dume School Still Not Running From Malibu West, Despite Fernhill Jam

Written by on October 4, 2019

The daily afternoon traffic jam at the Point Dume elementary school campus was easily predicted … when the school district closed Cabrillo Elementary and sent those kids to the point.

The regional assistant superintendent for the school district says handling the traffic  jam is a work in progress.

Isaac Burgess.

“At dismissal or pickup in the afternoon … there’s about 10 to 12 minutes before really we get everybody moving through the line …

So from dismissal time for about 10 minutes … there really is no (through) traffic there on Fernhill whatsoever.”

The city planning commission required the school to try a school bus … to connect the new Malibu Elementary consolidated campus on Point Dume … with the old Cabrillo school site at Malibu High.

Burgess says that bus is running.

“It comes here in the morning and in the afternoon it comes back.

“Yes there is a bus.”

REPORTER: “But it doesn’t go into Malibu West or any of the other neighborhoods…..”

BURGESS: “They’re working on that piece but we’re trying to encourage more families to participate with that.”

Burgess says parent volunteers and uniformed city cops are trying to untangle the Fernhill mess … on a daily basis.
