KBUU Newswire 10a Mon July 9: Man Killed On PCH – Murder News Blackout Gripes – Short-Term Rentals Tonight

Written by on July 9, 2018

One of the most divisive issues in Malibu’s two and a half decades of cityhood goes before the city council tonight.

Short term rentals.

Some Malibu residents have been complaining for nearly a decade … that their streets are being turned into loud party motel zones.

Other residents have been renting out houses … guest rooms or duplexes for years … without any complaints or problems whatsoever.

Most coastal cities have already enacted tight regulations on overnight rentals … some of them so tight that the Coastal Commission has ruled that they restrict beach access illegally.

Santa Monica … for example … will only allow overnight rentals if the host is in the premises.

That is an example of government overkill to some Malibu residents … who carefully manage their units and avoid loud noise and other impacts.

But other Malibu residents point to parking problems … loud parties … people peeing or worse on their lawn … and other problems.

And they say … enough is enough.

Air B and B has become a billion-dollar company … and it is working with Malibu residents to preserve the business model.

They say it’s an issue that could drive some Malibu homeowners out … because they rely on overnight rentals to make their mortgage payments.

The city council meeting starts tonight at 6:30.

Video is available on the city’s YouTube channel … the city’s website … and Fios cable channel 3.

KBUU will be live Tweeting and Facebooking tonight … and with the decision expected very late … we invite you to find out what happened tomorrow here on the KBUU Radio News .. or on the KBUU Facebook and Twitter feeds.
