Headlines out of Laguna Beach this morning.

The owners of a house … protected by an illegal seawall …were hit with a fine of one million dollars and ordered to tear immediately tear down the sea wall.

The California Coastal Commission said the house … which sticks out beyond other houses … had to have its emergency sea wall removed because the house was substantially remodeled. The commission now says sea walls are only permitted if necessary and if no less environmentally damaging feasible alternative is available to protect a house.

And it a house gets remodeled … sea walls have to go and the house will have to be moved up or back.

Commissioners doubled the proposed half million dolalr fine … and said the sea wal as to go … now.

Chairwoman Dayna Bochco said the owners should have known that they were “going to have to deal with the Coastal Commission one way or the other

“You’re on the beach, you just can’t get away with this stuff.” she said at th emeeting yesterday in Redondo Beach.
