School Buses Should Be Running After All, SMMUSD Says

Written by on August 22, 2018

School starts tomorrow…. and it looks like school buses WILL be running.

There was some question about that  … due to a problem with a new state law.

The law requires school buses to have a device in the back row … which must be manually checked by the bus driver at the start and finish of every run.

This is to ensure the bus is checked … preventing deaths if unattended students.

Several kids in wheelchairs have been accidentally left aboard school buses in hot sun … in recent tragic accidents in California.

Legislators reacted by passing a law … requiring the back seat alarms.

Problem is … manufacturers have not come up with the devices.

That left it against the law to run the school buses this year without the devices.

As of last night … local state senators were scrambling for a legislative solution in Sacramento … in the form of an emergency change in the new state law.

Superintendent Ben Drati told KBUU News last night he is is confidant the Malibu school buses will be running.

Five bus routes serve Malibu students from the Sunset Mesa … Topanga Beach … Big Rock and other parts of the school district … attending Webster … Malibu Middle and Malibu High schools.
