New Ramirez Cyn Campground Opened By MRCA, MRCA Claims

Written by on August 10, 2018

A new campground has been set up in Malibu.

Joe Edmiston  … director of the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority … claimed credit at the Coastal Commission meeting yesterday in Redondo beach.

He said the M R C A has created a new … bicycle only camping facility in Ramirez Canyon … at the old Barbra Streisand Estate.

Open to 12 campers per night … access only up the private road in Ramirez Canyon.

Joe Edmiston …

“Now, no camping in Malibu, Malibu has banned that by ordinance, but 20 feet away from the Malibu city limits, in Ramirez Canyon, we have this wonderful camping program.”

Edmiston showed pictures of bicyclists using the supposed campground.

In one … someone was cooking dinner on a camp stove … right next to the tinder dry brush.

The new bike campground may be not legal.

Under a settlement with ramirez Canyon landowners … Edmiston was blocked from hosting weddings and other lucrative events at the estate … most of which is in Malibu city limits.

“The moral of this story is, that no matter how difficult, how intractable an access problem is, and Malibu certainly is, OK?
“Tthere is light at the end of the tunnel, there is campaign there is public enjoyment in the tunnel, stay the course.”

FEMALE VOICE:
“Thank you Joe, thank you so much,”

That voice of thankful praise at the end is Coastal Commission chairwoman Dayna Bochco.

If there is a new bike campground in Ramirez Canyon … the M R C A has kept it under cover.

It is not mentioned on the M R C A website.

No signs.

No publicity.

Other than some fancy strutting at the Coastal Commisison.

Edmiston was not the only M R C A official speakign at the call to the public yesterday … at the meeting in Redondo Beach.

An M R C A lawyer took off after Sycamore Park … and the residents who are trying to keep a public park out of their driveway.

Sycamore Park residnets have been sued by the M R C A for 10 million dollars each … over their efforts to maintain a private access road that they built as a private road.

The M R C A has purchased a lot in the subdivision … and claims that gives them the right to open the privately-built, privately maintained road to the general public.

Sycamore Park out up a guard shack … hired a guard … and the lawsuits flew.

Eric Edmunds, lawyer for the MRCA … says it’s a matter of the well-connected residents of Sycamore Park … who don’t want the public to come into their community.”

ERICEDMUNDS BBBB QQQ: COME INTO THEIR COMMUNITY,

“In June, your faithful and vigilant staff wrote a letter to Malibu, informing the city that this is a violation of the Coastal Act, and that the residents and the city must obtain a CDP and enforce the law.

“But the City of Malibu blew you off.

“On July 6th  they worte back to the Coastal Commission, that they don’t think this blockage of Via Escondido is a violation of the Coastal Act, or requires a CDP.

“They are turning a blind eye and looking the other way.”

And the MRCA attorney continued to charge the city with selective enforcement.

ERICEDMUNDS CCCC :29  QQQ: AND LOOKING INTO IT.

“We put up a picnic table and trash can on the two parcels that we own.

“Believe it or not, uh, folks, Malibu has now sued us to remove these two items, as well as a brown sign we are required to post by by law.

We need your and your staff’s assistance, to secure public access to important coastal and trail assets here.”

FEMALE VOICE:

“Thank you very much, and we are aware of it, and looking into it.”

Again, the voice of Coastal Committee Chairwoman Dayna Bochco … at the end.

No Sycamore Park residents were present at the Redondo Beach meeting … the item was not on the agenda … the government employees snuck the matter in during the call to the public.

The Coastal Commission meeting continues today … in Redondo Beach.
