35 More Houses Have Hazmat Clearances, Get Yellow Placards

Written by on December 10, 2018

Another 35 houses in Malibu were inspected and cleared of hazmat on Friday.

State and federal inspectors are entering burned out properties … one by one … and looking for materials that cannot be taken to the landfill.

Things like melted lead batteries … cans on paint that made it through the inferno …

SWEPT AS OF LAST WEEK:  62

SWEPT FOR HAZMAT FRIDAY:  35

DONE SO FAR:  97

TOTAL DESTROYED:  435

LEFT TO GO:   338

ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE:  WED DEC. 25

Hazardous material is being removed for disposal at a hazmat dump.

As of last Wednesday ,,, there were 62 Malibu houses on the yellow tag list.

Crews did not work in the driving rain on Thursday.

97 houses are on the yellow tag list right now.

Do the math … with 475 total destroyed houses within city limits … at this rate it will take about two more weeks to check all the houses inside City Limits.

It’s not clear what the clearance rate is for the 11-hundred or so houses outside Malibu city limits.

As we have been reporting … once a house is inspected and hazmat material is cleared … the house gets a yellow placard and is put in the all-clear list.

That enables a homeowner to either pull demolition permits and take down the wreckage … or allow the city’s crew from California Recycles to do the work at no charge.

That effort will start in about 2 or 3 weeks.
