1/2 Inch Gentle Rain Tonight

Written by on November 21, 2018

The National Weather Service says rain will spread across Malibu early tonight … as the LA County Department of Public Works gets ready for Malibu mud to make its appearance.

There is even a slight chance for thunderstorms … and heavy rain could fall under those.

We can expect a half inch of rain … light and steady … in this storm.

But if the thunder storm hits … make that up to an inch and a quarter.

That’s just exactly what the hills of Malibu do not need … as any significant rainfall will cause soil rocks and mud .. lots of mud … on ocal roadways.

County trucks and workers rolled into Trancas Canyon while bushes were still smoldering last week … reconstructing the wooden debris basins that hold back rocks and snags in the little gullies above houses.

Today is the day to protect property with sandbags.

They are available at Malibu fire stations… and filled sandbags are available at the Malibu lifeguard station at Zuma Beach.

The County fire and flood people are urging Malibu residents to know how to shut off all utilities.

Remember, water and electricity do not mix.

Flowing water is an instant danger zone.

Stay away from flood control channels, catch basins, canyons and natural waterways which are susceptible to flooding during periods of heavy rain.

You can expect numerous sharp rocks to fall on major roadways … not just the narrow canyon road but major roadways like Kanan Dume and Malibu Canyon roads …

Pacific Coast Highway near Point Mugu was spared this time from fire … but ricks always fall there.

As the L A Times reminds us … In December 2014, heavy rain sent mud and rock streaming into homes in Camarillo Springs more than a year after the Springs fire tore across the Santa Monica Mountains. Then in January, a mudslide devastated Montecito, killing at least 21 people and destroying more than 100 homes a month after the massive Thomas fire.
