City Will Step In To Build Turn Lane In Front Of Trancas Market, After Landowners Reneges On Promise

Written by on July 10, 2020

P C H may finally be getting a right turn lane at Trancas.

The City of Malibu has convinced Caltrans that cars slowing down to turn into the Trancas County Market … and onto Trancas Canyon Road … need to get out of 50 mile per hour plus traffic.

Side note … a pickup truck got totaled this week … rear ended at that very intersection.

Activists have spent 12 years campaigning for the safety improvement.

They say the road widening should have been installed by the shopping center … when the city gave it numerous zoning code exemptions for an expansion.

The shopping center owners promised the neighbors … in writing … that it would widen PCH and put int he turn lane.

That turned out to be  … charitably … a false promise … a lie.

Malibu city manager Reva Feldman says she has convinced Caltrans that the road needs to be widened at the same time that Caltrans replaces the 95 year old bridge over the creek.

The bridge is crumbling … the state wants to put in a new wider bridge.

Reconstruction will  start next February .. and take 2 years.

The bridge will cost 12 point 5 million dollars … the turn lane … no estimate.

No estimate how much the right turn lane will cost.

The city is planing to use regional Measure R transportation sales tax money … that’s to put in the turn lane … that the shopping center has promised to pay for.

The city and Caltrans will explain their plans for the new Trancas Creek bridge  … and the turn lane … at a computer meeting.

It will be next Wednesday …. from 6 to 8 p-m.
