New Master Plan For Malibu High Unveiled

Written by on September 19, 2019

Architects unveiled the latest master plan concept for reconstructing Malibu High School last night.

It was last spring … when the Santa Monica Malibu district’s architects presented four major concepts to rebuild the joint senior high school and middle school campus on Morning View Drive.

And it appears that architects have refined the proposal to conform to what was said last spring.

The current concept is for almost the entire campus to be torn down … except for the new construction being built now.

A two story high school would rise on the site of the old elementary school.

It would be sited to take advantage of ocean views.

Student parking would be where the current elementary school field and bus garage are.

A central U-shaped driveway would replace the current auditorium.

A new performing arts center would be built … about where the school offices are now.

Also … new gyms.

The middle school would be built out with a new two-story classroom complex replacing the existing Shark Building ….

The plans seemed well received by the half dozen people there last night …

The new plans reflected the strong opinions voiced last spring … according to one resident who has been to both meetings.

The plan now goes to the Malibu Facility District Advisory Committee .. a group of parents … teachers and administrators.

Then to the Santa Monica-Malibu school board

If approved … the district will hire a project architect to begin designing the first phase.

There is about 195 million dollars approved by Malibu voters for this project . plus projects at the two elementary schools.

But it appears that a second bond issue would be needed to build the entire concept.
