Malibu Community Group Formed To Promote Public Schools

Malibu’s drive to separate out of the Santa Monica Malibu School District continues.
Negotiations between the school board and the City of Malibu have been going on for nearly two years now … quietly and behind the scenes.
The district has already snipped apart bond issues for the two parts of the district.
And fundraising efforts for Santa Monica have already divorced Malibu.
For years … the foundation that was raising money for district operations in both Malibu and Santa Monica has been all but ignored by Malibu residents.
Parents here have been unhappy for years with the Santa Monica-majority district … which has transferred 10s of millions of dollars out of the Malibu tax base to rebuild decrepit schools in Santa Monica.
Santa Monica has snipped Malibu out of the Santa Monica Malibu Education Foundation … which this fall just raised 600 thousand dollars in Santa Monica to pay for arts teachers … education supplies and other things … in Santa Monica only.
A new group called Malibu LEAD has been put together … by community leaders.
That stands for Malibu Leading Educational Advancement and Development.
But Malibu LEAD is just getting off the ground … they are putting together a web site and running a contest to design a new logo.
The deadline for that is tonight … by the way.
Malibu LEAD is the new fundraising entity for all four Malibu public schools … Webster … Malibu Elementary … Malibu Middle and Malibu High schools.
Organizers say they represent local control and educational excellence.
The group’s new website, www.malibulead.org will be ready for you soon. You can sign up for our email list or make a donation now.
