Malibu Kids Will Get Free School Supplies This Year

Written by on August 9, 2019

Malibu attorney Kevin Shenkman keeps suing Santa Monica … and keeps winning.

And as a result … Malibu kids heading back to school this month are being told to leave their pencils and backpacks at home.

Schools will be providing backpacks to every kid …. stuffed with the supplies they will need for the year

This … according to the Santa Monica Lookout newspaper.

Shenkman and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District yesterday  ettled a class action lawsuit brought by Shenkman.

He claimed that the District illegally requires students to purchase certain items needed for school.

California’s state constitution requires a free education for all elementary school pupils.

The Santa Monica Lookout newspaper reports that the school district must reimburse parents for school items and pupil fees spent after July 12th, 2016.

Shenkman told the newspaper he estimates that parents and students paid millions of dollars a year for supplies.

The settlement also requires the District to pay Shenkman $560,000 in legal fees and $15,000 in legal costs.

Shenkman said he would “take a significant portion of the fees” to establish the Santa Monica-Malibu Social and Racial Justice Fund to help students work to further those causes.

“They could have avoided this,” Shenkman told the newspaper. “They’ve had notice of this (the violation) for a long, long time, and they didn’t do anything about it.”
