A heat advisory for Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains goes into effect at 11 this morning … and remains in place until 6 tomorrow night.

The National Weather Service says highs up to 97 are possible in the San Fernando Valley … 92 along the 101 freeway in Agoura Hills.

As for the winds …. Santa Anas from the north and northeast … with gusts up to 50 miles per hour …. are still possible this morning.

But they should die down this afternoon.

L A County fire officials are worried about the huge crop of weeds and grass … visible to all inthe Santa Monica Mountains.

Fire cheif Daryl Osby says the Coronavirus pandemic makes it more important than ever this year to get a large turnout … fast … when fires break out.

OSBY NEWSCART 75550LATE RAIN

“We’re concerned … we’ve had a lot of rainfall late in the spring hear and that’s concerning to us.

“The good thing about the fact we are having late rainfall is that it has pushed back our fire season about one month.”

The fire chief was speaking at a news conference yesterday.

The disease’s spread is changing firefighting tactics.

NEWSCART 75551 OSBY COVID FIRES

“We are concerned about the potential impacts that the COVID 19 may have on our ability to respond to fires.

“And so we’ve been having a lot of meetings and online conservations and training to ensure that we can do all that we can to prevent fires, but if there are fires we will do all that we can as a team that we keep them from becoming large incidents.”

As for fire risks, the threat is low this weekend.

The rain the region has received has made the moisture in local vegetation above normal.

It is possible that hot, dry weather and winds could produce some grass fires … however … firefighters say.
