SMMUSD Weighs Options On Malibu High Opening Plan

Written by on November 27, 2018

Santa Monica Malibu school district superintendent Ben Drati met with parent leaders and school principals last night… to hear concerns about reopening Malibu high school and Juan Cabrillo elementary school.

Those two campuses are surrounded by burned-out properties … but escaped any serious fire damage.

The big issue for parents is air-quality at the schools.

Some parents said the open air breezeways should be enclosed in plastic so that kids could breathe filtered air between classes.

Many classrooms … particularly at Juan Cabrillo … do not have forced ventilation and therefore have no air filters.

The current schedule is for Webster elementary teachers to enter their classrooms today … and students tomorrow.

Point Dume teachers will head back Monday … students next Tuesday.

As for Juan Cabrillo and Malibu High … the superintendent is weighing options.

If the district waits for PCB test results to return from a test lab in Utah … the cleaning schedule means teachers cannot enter the buildings until next Fridat … and school will not reopen to students until Monday December 10th.

The PCB tests will take one week..

But Drati heard last night that employees want those tests taken … before they reenter the facility.

The final decision will come out today.

One other upshot from the meeting last night …

School principals will close the campuses in major rain storms.

Hundreds of students now live outside of Malibu … and may be coming in to Malibu every day.

Rockslides in the canyons … and mudslides in Malibu… are a major worry.
