SCE and CPUC Push Back Against Malibu Over Intentional Blackout Notification

Written by on October 19, 2018

Both the California Public Utilities Commission and Southern California Edison are pushing back on Malibu’s claims regarding last Monday’s power outages.

A spokesperson for the Edison company tells KBUU News … and we quote … “Malibu was not considered or notified for a Public Safety Power Shutoff.”

And a spokeswoman for the CPUC says much the same thing.

She tells KBUU that the Edison company .. quoting now … “did not perform PSPS (preemeptive blackouts) during the recent weather event.’

That conflicts with what the Edison comapny told Malibu city manager Reve Feldman … who was told by Edison twice last Monday that western Malibu was on the list for preemptive blackouts.

Now that notf is imp

If Edison indeed gave Malibu that notice, that means Edison has to file a report with t he styate within 10 days.

It does appears that no circuits were turned off … that the extensive power outages on Malibu on Monday were caused by 60 mile per hour winds.

Terrie Prosper … spokeswoman for the CPUC … says the state agency has received concerns and questions related to outages that occurred …. and are reviewing SCE’s actions.

The new state policy on preemptive blackouts requires utilities to submit a report to the state within two weeks a utility provided notifications to local government of possible de-energization.

The CPUC says it will review Edison’s actions during this event … and may conduct an investigation if potential violations are identified.
