Pt Dume Residents Push For Gate To Cliffside Parking Lot

Written by on September 28, 2018

It looks like a gate will soon be installed at the entrance to the small parking lot at Point Dume … on Cliffside Drive.

Also … alligator teeth in the pavement at the exit … to allow cars to get out.

The entry gate will be locked at sunset.

Residents near the park have requested the gates …. to better enforce the existing rules that close the parking lot at sunset and overnight.

The parking lot was built 18 years ago … the result of a settlement between the Coastal Commission and the city.

More than 20 years ago … Malibu dumped boulders on the side of the road at the park … to prevent the public from using the state park.

That backfired in a spectacular way.

And the current small parking lot … with limited hours … was built.

But the sunset parking ban is largely not enforced … sheriffs deputies have higher priorities.

The gate at the entrance … and alligator teeth to allow cars to drive out… was requested by residents.

And residents will pay for the gate and exit teeth.

The city will be responsible for opening and closing the gate

The plan apparently has the support of California State Parks … it goes to the city planning commission on Monday.
