PCB, Lead Testing Will Push Back Opening At Cabrillo And MHS

Written by on November 22, 2018

The reopening date for Malibu High School has been pushed back … again.

This time … the culprit is testing for PCB … the chemical that was used in the 1960s to glue things together.

Superintendent Ben Drati announced yesterday that both Malibu High and adjacent Juan Cabrillo Elementary Will need testing for the suspected carcinogenic chemical.

The elementary school Will open sometime between December 3 and fifth.

The combined middle school and high school will open sometime the week of December 4 through the 10th.

Webster will reopen next Wednesday.

Point Dume School one week from next Monday.

The district says they are working with a certified professional cleaning company at the schools.

Industrial hygiene experts are testing for lead, asbestos and polychlorinated biphenyls … or PCBs.

Superintendent Ben Drati says he has heard concerns regarding lost instruction time during the current school closures.

State laws that require lost time to be made up can be waived in emergencies.

The school district will be submitting forms requesting that school -not- be extended beyond the planned last day of school on June 12th.

But what to do about fall classes … and the finals that are supposed to be taken before the end of the year … remain unanswered.

Drati is considering delaying finals and the end of first semester.

The first semester is 81 days and the second semester is 99 days, which provides the opportunity to move the end of the first semester and have finals taken in January.

But one big concern has to be AP tests…. those are on a national schedule and juggling them may be difficult.

The district says its teachers are taking every consideration for AP student needs … including the use of independent study and online learning options.
