On One Side, Termites In City Hall – On The Other, Poison Free Malibu

Written by on October 9, 2018

Malibu City Hall is infested with termites.

And orange oil isn’t going to solve it.

That icky fact intersected with a roomful of pesticide free Malibu advocates last night … when the city council tried to come up with an earth friendly property management policy.

Kian Schulman … the president of Poison Free Malibu … objected to the city staff ’s proposed earth friendly management policy.

“They have eliminated all these parameters, of checklisting, of making sure this is done, if that was done.

“That is a pure pesticide use policy, a typical PIM policy that’s created by the pesticide industry that is out there.

One contentious issue was gophers … which are causing sidewalks to collapse at Bluffs park.

The city proposes to capture them and humanely kill them.

The poison free people want the gophers relocated … the city council has found that it’s illegal to dump live gophers on someone else’s property.

City council member Laura Rosenthal showed a video of swarms of termites … crawling out of the woodwork in the Malibu City Hall kitchen.

“I mean this was pretty distressing to me.

“And I understand that they are in the crawl-ways and the areas that are not accessible, and that they are in the areas where orange oil will not have an impact on them.”

The city council made a half hours worth of comments on the proposed policy … but sent the proposed earth-friendly policy back for changes.

As councilman Lou La Monte said … the new city council that will be seated in a month will make changes anyway.

As for the termite emergency … that decision comes in two weeks.
