Just how bad was California’s last drought?
Let’s go to the tapes…. and for drought records … that means looking at tree rings.
It essentially did not rain in significant amounts here for five years … ending in 2015.
And for most of Southern California … it was either the worst or second worst drought since the 1400s.
The University of Arizona’s Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research looked at tree rings in 46 places in California.
The California Department of Water Resources released the study yesterday.
Trees don’t grow very much in droughts … and the science of dendrology looks at tree ring thickness to interpolate rainfall.
California had major droughts starting in 1452 and 1775.
The tree-ring evidence indicates the latest drought was the “worst five-year drought in the past six centuries” … the scientists said. , as measured by the percent of average precipitation or streamflow.”
Two storms scheduled to hit the state this week could dump as much as 100 inches of snow on the Sierra Nevada.
We headed into this “March Miracle” with a very dry winter …. just 37 percent of average snowpack.
That is likely to increase precipitously.
Weather for the Malibu ….
Patchy fog and gloomy … with rain to arrive by 11 o’clock this morning …
Then … 80 percent chance of showers … highs (((( 63 )))) beaches … (((( 67 )))) mountains.
Winds off the ocean at ((( 5 to 10 )))) miles per hour.
Sunset tonight is at (((( 7:01 )))) … if you could see it.
After that … ((( rainy )))) tonight … lows of (((( 56 )))) beaches … (((( 52 )))) mountains.
Chance of rain … 80 percent.
Tomorrow should be (((( rainy in the morning … showers all day.
Rain is in the forecast for the next 5 days. )))).
Right now … at Trancas it’s (((( 58 )))) degrees.
In upper Malibu Canyon … (((( 54 )))) .
And at Civic Center Los Angeles … (((( 61 )))).
In the ocean … it’s (((( 54 )))) degrees in the water at Zuma Beach.
The lifeguards say the waves today are (((( 2 to 3 )))) feet high ….
(((( New primary West and secondary South swell slowly filling in. ))))
Those are (((( poor to fair )))) surfing conditions …. according to the lifeguards.
((((( High tide is at 7:51 this morning …. 4.8 feet.
