A small child was hit by a car and seriously injured last night near the big sand dune on Thornhill Broome State Beach.

The Ventura County Star reports that an 8-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle along the Pacific Coast Highway at about 6:28 p.m.

The child suffered major injuries … including a broken leg and a head injury … according to the CHP.

He was unconscious when Ventura County fire paramedics arrived from Malibu station 56.

An ambulance transferred the victim to a helicopter, which took him to Ventura County Medical Center.

His condition this morning cannot be disclosed ….under federal health privacy laws.

Yesterday’s 5 point 3 magnitude earthquake had an epicenter about 40 miles west and a bit south from Malibu.

The National Park Service has released pictures of landslides … on Santa Cruz Island as the earthquake hit.

And the eagle camera on Santa Cruz Island showed a distressed parent eagle fly away from three fledglings … trying to figure out why their sturdy tree was shaking like that.

We have a link to that posted on the KBUU Newswire.

Also, a photo of new cliffs that were the site of big landslides over on Santa Cruz Island.

Here in Malibu … residents reported swaying … many reported just a bump.

The quake was far too weak to generate a tsunami.

Generally, earthquakes of magnitude 7 or above are those that cause concern.

The earthquake yesterday proved to be another successful test of the state’s brand new earthquake early-warning system.

Researchers at the Southern California Earthquake Center at Caltech … the USGS and at USC heard the alarm go off before they felt the shaking.

The USGS is still working out kinks in the system … and plans to begin issuing limited public alerts from the system by the end of this year.

Malibu’s city council meets Monday.

We’ve told you about the school district separation issue … the recycling program issue … the plan to feed homeless people at the county courts building issue.

One other matter that is newsworthy.

Local assembly member Richard Bloom has introduced a bill in the State Assembly that would ban rodent poison in the entire state … if it contains anticoagulant poison.

These rat killers … also used for ground squirrels and gophers … cause the rodents to die in their rathole … as their internal organs hemorrhage and dissolve.

Often … their poison-laden remains are eaten by coyotes or other animals … and the poison works its way up the food chain to cougars and other predators.

Malibu has banned selling this type of poison … and on Monday … the city council is expected to endorse Assemblyman Richard Bloom’s bill … AB 24-22.
