  • = The new traffic light on Kanan-Dume is uncorked … ready to serve winery customers.
  • =  And an oil company from Houston goes on criminal trial … charged with felonies for the oil spill 80 miles up the coast from Malibu.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news. It’s the   (((( internet  ))) edition of the (((  Friday ))) news … from Radio Malibu  …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

——

The Santa Monica Malibu school superintendent is warning students …. not to walk out of classes today to join a nationwide campaign for gun control laws.

Students at Santa Monica High and various westside high schools in Los Angeles plan to converge at a rally at Santa Monica City Hall.

The walkout last month began as a protest in favor of gun control … but after meeting with district officials … it morphed into a march in honor of the victims of Parkland High last month.

Who can oppose that, right???
But today’s walkout is a call for gun control laws … and that’s a step too far… according to school superintendent Ben Drati.

He says that’s a political rally … and that is not authorized.

The superintendent has warned students that they will be marked as cutting class if they walk out of class to participate in the rally.

At least one school board member in Santa Monica is endorsing the walkout.

Oscar de la Torre says he plans to join the students …. at their rally at Santa Monica City Hall.

Malibu Mayor Rick Mullen will deliver his State of the city address today at Malibu City Hall.

The morning Address is sponsored by the Malibu chamber of Commerce … it’s free to attend if you want to watch everybody else eating the the 45 dollar breakfast.

Mullen is a first-term city councilman who has rotated into the mayoral seat.

Under Malibu’s City manager form of government … the mayor is largely a figurehead … and the five-member city council all have one vote each … with the professional administrators hired by the city running the levers of government.

Will have coverage of the speech on Monday.

In Santa Barbara … the Texas-based oil company that drenched beaches 80 miles upcoast of Malibu is on trial … on criminal charges.

Jury selection began yesterday in Santa Barbara County Superior Court … in a case that will determine whether the company that operated a pipeline that ruptured broke laws.

Plains All American Pipeline spilled at least 123 thousand gallons of raw crude oil on May 19, 2015.

Plains All American is charged with three felonies for spilling oil on land and in state and federal waters.

Also … it is charged with 12 misdemeanors … such as violations of fish and game laws for killing sea lions, pelicans, a loon and a dolphin.

Plains All American apologized for the spill and paid cleanup costs.

But it has insisted the spill was an accident and not a crime.

Since the spill … the offshore oil platform that was connected to the pipeline has been shut down and abandoned by another oil company … leaving state taxpayers with the cleanup costs in the 500 million dollar range.

Planes All American pipeline is headquartered in Houston Texas…. It says the leak was nothing more than an accident.

State safety inspectors say it was an accident waiting to happen … with corroded equipment and a comedy of errors at the Control center … wear planes all American controllers increased the flow of oil into the pipeline when they noticed the pressure dropping.

In news from down the coast … the 27-year-old Santa Monica Promenade is showing signs of aging.

The rise of the internet has caused many retailers to retrench … and for the first time since the Promenade was built … there are vacancies along Third Street.

According to the Santa Monica Lookout newspaper … the company that operates the Third Street Promenade is hosting workshops this month … seeking ideas to build a vision to help steer construction improvements and programming.

On May First … residents and businesspersons will focus on how shopping is changing, how retail is changing and what Santa Monica can do with the physical space to make it more vibrant.

The Lookout newspaper notes that office rentals are driving Downtown’s Santa Monica’s thriving  leasing market …  it is the restaurants and shops on the ground floor is that lures visitors to the strip.

The current Santa Monica promenade opened 27 years ago … it replaced a failed outdoor mall that had been built in the 1960s.

Back in the Malibu … that new traffic signal at Kanan Dume Road at Mulholland Highway has been switched on.

The traffic light necessary … as restaurants … wine tasting stores… and heavy weekend motorcycle and race car traffic had made that intersection clogged on weekends.

Los Angeles County traffic engineers switch on the signal this week.

It’s the only traffic light on Kanan Dume Road between Agoura Hills and P C H.

——

Overnight road work is planned tonight on P C H … more repaving in various places between Zuma Beach and Cross Creek.

Lane closures will start at 7 p-m.

And tonight at 10 … Edison crews will again have one lane closed heading towards Santa Monica at the eastern end of the city … at Tuna Canyon.
