Homeless Feeding At City Hall OK’d Despite Employee Fears

Four weeks ago … some central Malibu residents had just been singed by a brushfire that came from a homeless camp …
They demanded from the city council something be done about homeless persons in the Civic Center area.

QQQ; AND COME UP WITH A SOLUTION.
“Speaking for my neighbors up on the Knolls, and probably for other residents across Malibu, we need to move this up on the priority list and come up with a solution.”
That’s Planning Commissioner Steve Uhring … one month ago … urging a solution that implicitly included moving homeless feeding events OUT of Malibu.
Last night … the Malibu City Council went the other way.
It approved the concept of using City Hall as a place for Malibu residents to feed homeless people . once a week … as a temporary matter.
And … as opposed to the fiery crowd after the brushfire … last night City Hall was filled with Malibu residents … who were asking that City Hall be used as a place to feed homeless persons.
A coalition of churches and homeless outreach groups last night asked the city council to allow City Hall to be used … once a week … to feed people who have nothing.
Here’s Schifra Wylder … of Standing On Stone … which has fed Malibu homeless for 17 years.

QQQ HAS ALREADY BEEN TARNISHED.
“We need to take action.
“The meals are something we can and should do now.
“The city council’s decision on this reflects on all of us.
“Our reputation has already been tarnished.”
The group calls its effort MORE … Meals Outreach Relationships and Engagement.
They propose bringing in prepared food … one day a week …. to Malibu City Hall … security provided … on a temporary basis.
City council members said they had a conundrum.
The nature of homeless in Malibu has changed.

QQQQ TEMPORARY OPTION TO HOST SOMETHING HERE.
“Just this evening we had a homeless person in this building going through cabinets after part of building was closed, trying to find things.
“All at the same time I was getting text messages … homeless people fighting in the shopping center across the street, over a cell phone charger, which took four or five police cars to deal with, and we all know there was a fire that happened right down in this area, not too long ago.
“Despite that stuff, I think there’s a lot of people in this community that can really use the resources of a food-based program.
“And I would like to see this council come up with some sort of temporary option to house something here.”
The city manager will now come up with some sort of temporary option.
Several problems were noted.
Employees do not feel safe at City Hall in the dark hours … strange men lurking.
The City Hall is rented out for numerous events … including parking for offsite weddings at the Adamson House.
And it’s a long dark path to the bus stop.
Stewart Ranch Road is the only access to City Hall.
It’s narrow … unlit .. no sidewalks.
City Manager Reva Feldman will examine the logistics … and report back to the city council.
