$91 Million Budget Includes Roadwork, Land Purchases

Malibu’s city budget goes before the city council for a vote on Monday.

And it shows that the cities savings account is dipping just about as low as it can go … as Malibu is making a major investment in the future.

The city is spending almost $43 million to buy three large parcels of land for possible parks use … two at the Civic Center and one at Point Dume.

These cities piggy bank is now dipping to 66% of the annual operating budget … just a hair above the amount needed to maintain the city’s Triple A bond rating.

The city manager’s proposed budget totals just above $77 million in revenue … and $91 million in expenses … reflecting the purchases.

One big hit … the overall budget for Public Safety is up $634,000.

That reflects a 3 percent bigger bill from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies are getting a cost of living raise … the the Sheriffs Department Liability Trust Fund also is more expensive.

Additionally, $200,000 has been allocated in the Public Safety budget for homeless services including outreach provided by The People Concern.

Another big cost increase is the $265,000 increase in Planning … due to increased salaries and benefits and additional Professional Services needed to meet Council priorities.

There is also a $40,000 increase in Code Enforcement … due to increased salaries and benefits.

The city now has three full-time code enforcement workers … who are also covering weekend shifts.

Next year’s budget also includes 3 1/2 billion dollars to rebuild Civic Center Way… and about $1 million to improve Pacific Coast Highway with messaging signs … median improvements and synchronize traffic lights.

Also .. $1 million to put solar energy cells on City Hall.
